Rail transport deregulation: the Italian example

To date, the Italian high-speed market has been divided up between two companies: historic operator Trenitalia and (since 2012) NTV, a private company. Today, both are turning a profit. Open-access deregulation of the Italian market has led to healthy competition, resulting in lower fares, improved quality of service, and a better offer. At a time when several companies have expressed an interest in commercial services in France, with deregulation due from the end of 2020 onwards, this session looks at the lessons to be learned from Italy.
