Electricity, biogas, hybrid powertrains, biofuels, and hydrogen are all alternative solutions to diesel. The choice of energy and equipment depends on fundamentals that differ widely since they are specific to local topography, climate, heritage, planning, restricted-traffic areas, means of supply, etc. The transition to even greener modes of transport must be implemented whilst preserving high service levels and controlling costs. Will transport networks find it easy to address this issue, and if so, how? What’s the state of play as regards their use of alternatives to diesel?
