The health crisis has had a serious impact on the finances of public and rail transport in France. A combination of furloughing, sick leave, and the waiver or deferral of social security contributions by private-sector operators has led to a sharp drop in ‘mobility payment’ income, in addition to a drastic fall in fare revenues during the lockdown, with the latter still not back to pre-crisis levels. Faced with this unprecedented state of affairs, the French government has implemented a range of measures in the Finance Act, with others due in the Amended Finance Act. Will these be enough to shore up the sector?
