Almost 40% of rail freight currently travels on feeder lines. Passenger branch lines are also highly appreciated by the population. However, considerable investment is required for upkeep and maintenance of these lines. France’s Mobility Orientation Act will enable mobility authorities to take responsibility for this upkeep and maintenance, but will this new state of affairs overcome the obstacles still faced by rail freight? What is the position of rail companies, shippers, and infrastructure managers?
