Public transport has clearly engaged wholeheartedly in energy transition, as can be seen from the constant decrease in the proportion of diesel-engined vehicles in rolling stock fleets. However, there are still many uncertainties surrounding this change: what’s the feedback on electric buses, the operation, and their maintenance? Why are the authorities so hesitant to embrace biogas and biofuels? What’s the outlook for hydrogen-powered vehicles? How far away are they?

It’s often said that each locality is responsible for defining appropriate energy sources for its bus and locomotive fleets, but how much leeway do mobility authorities and operators really have?
